April 2010 Ask the Expert

Hand 1 from a B player:

Vul E/W

Matchpoints, Club Game

Dealer: North

Partnership plays Lebehsohl over reverses even with opposition bidding.

Bidding Sequence:

Partner        RHO        Me            LHO

1D                P            1H            2C

2S                P            2NT            P

3H                P            ?

1.  Since partner did not do a support double of hearts after the 2C bid, how many hearts does his later 3H bid promise?  Can he have only 2 hearts, or must he have 3 hearts in this auction?  In other words, what takes priority the reverse or a support double?

2.  Since partner did not relay to 3D after my Lebensohl 2NT bid, does his 3H bid promise extra values beyond a minimum reverse, i.e. at least an 18-19 point hand?

3.  Is 3H a forcing or non-forcing bid?

Questions:

This hand came up and my partner and I disagree on the hand evaluations on both sides

On reexamination, S felt he should have opened 1Heart then partner would raise to 2 Hearts.  This is where the communication broke down.

South claims North should give a jump raise counting 1 points for the doubleton, 1 point for the extra heart, and bid 3 Hearts.

North contents that the bid should be a 2 Heart response to the 1 Heart opener, showing heart support with 6-9 points.  Then if opener bids 3 hearts inviting game, showing 16+ points, North would set the contract at 4 Hearts.

Who has limited his hand?  Who becomes captain in this scenario?

North says South and South says North.

How should the bidding go?
