Board Renames
Player of the Year Award...
Ed
Schultz Unit Champion Award
At
the March meeting, the Board renamed the Player of the Year
Award as the Ed Schultz Unit Champion Award. Along
with the name change, the Unit will add a traveling trophy,
funded by an anonymous donor.
Here
is a final tribute to Ed to accompany renaming award.
|
A
Tribute to Ed Schultz
Every
so often someone comes along who not only excels
at what he does but who also elevates the performance
of his peers by the force of his personality and
the level of his skill.
Ed
Schultz was just such an influence on St. Louis
Bridge. However, that does not even come close to
describing what Ed meant to his friends, in particular,
and to St. Louis Bridge in general.
Ed
was a huge personality who lit up whatever room
he was in – he had a high voltage enthusiasm and
an enormous appetite for life.
He
took success in stride and he faced adversity
with a courage that was beyond inspiring. Ed adored
his wife, his dogs, his friends, bridge and, of
course, the Illini – and not necessarily in that
order.
The
decision of the Board of Directors of Unit 143 to
name its most prestigious award in his honor and
memory and to have a permanent traveling trophy
could not be more fitting, not just because he was
Player of the Year with incredible consistency,
but also because of what he brought to the game
and to the lives of his friends. He would be so
proud of this honor and we are all so pleased that
he was a part of our lives.

Unit Appoints
New Disciplinary Committee & Chair
Unit
143 President Suzi Shymanski-Moore, on behalf of the Unit
143 Board Directors, has appointed a new Disciplinary Committee,
chaired by George Hawley . Committee members include
Sandy Becker and Carol Hamilton , both attorneys.
It
is the responsibility of the Committee to enforce the ACBL's
Code of Disciplinary Regulations (CDR). The purpose of the
CDR is to provide a fair hearing to every ACBL member charged
with a disciplinary infraction. Written complaints
may be addressed either to the Board through the President
or to the Unit Recorder, Milt Zlatic. The responsibility
of the Committee is to promptly receive and review all complaints
forwarded by the Unit Recorder, Milt Zlatic, and decide
upon an appropriate course of action.
Our
Unit, and therefore this Committee, has jurisdiction over
Unit members participating in a Unit sanctioned event, managers
of clubs, or any club sponsored sanctioned event relating
to complaints of alleged cheating or serious breaches of
ethics.
The
Unit wishes to thank Alan Popkin for his years of service
as Disciplinarian for the Unit.
Here is a link to
the ACBL
Code of Disciplinary Regulations.

U.S. News &
World Report has a current article on 50
Ways to Improve Your Life . Guess what's on the
list? Of course, learning to play bridge ! The
article says, " Never mind the obvious benefit of taking
your brain out for a vigorous stroll. The real beauty of
bridge is the other players. Learning to play bridge
will allow you to match wits and witticisms with an array
of folks whose only other commonality is that they tend
to be pretty clever."
Here is the entire
section on playing
bridge for you to read. The article, by the
way, hypes the ACBL and playing on-line; quite a PR piece
for us! Be sure to tell your friends!!!

Lindbergh, Hazelwood. This is
in the same building as the Liquor Store, immediately

January
Sectional cancelled due to ice storm.
Blanchette Park is a designated emergency shelter.
About 80 people sheltered there Saturday night.
The unit donated food which had been brought Friday
to those who needed assistance at the shelter.
Schnuck's
graciously permitted the Unit to cancel its food
order at the last minute. And our caterers
did, too. Heartfelt thanks!
This is
the first time in about 10 years that a Sectional
has been cancelled. |
