Body Language Online
If you are new to online protocol, you may be frustrated by the in-group language – those acronyms and punctuation symbols people stick into their sentences. Those have the fancy name of “emoticon” (emotional icons) because they are intended to be EMOTIon-CONveying by communicating body language.
After all, if you can’t see me smile, you may not know I am joking.
When you see punctuation marks, mentally turn the page 90 degrees clockwise, and picture the marks as a face, without the circle. For example,
| :) or :-) | happiness, sarcasm, or joke | |
| :] or :-] | jovial happiness | |
| :D or :-D | big grin | |
| :( or :-( | unhappiness | |
| :[ or :-[ | despondent unhappiness | |
| [[[ ]]] | Hugs (picture arms around someone) | |
| ... | please wait, I am still typing |
