St. Louis, January 20, 2012: Duplicate bridge players extended a helping hand to the American Red Cross with a $6000 donation on Friday, January 13. Debbie Romero, vice president of Unit 143 of the ACBL, the American Contract Bridge League, presented the check to Corie Story of the American Red Cross at the club’s Winter Sectional Tournament at Blanchette Park’s Memorial Hall in St. Charles.
The ACBL raises money nationally through charity events all year long. “This gift represents the generosity of bridge players throughout the country,” said Romero.
“Over the last year, the Red Cross has helped many people in our area get back on their feet after the terrible tornados in St. Louis and Joplin. In recognition of their outstanding work here, throughout the nation and the world, it is my pleasure to present the Red Cross with this check for $6000 on behalf of Unit 143 and the ACBL,” said Romero.
In the Greater St. Louis Region, the local Red Cross launched relief operations after severe storms and tornadoes struck on New Year’s Eve and Good Friday, and again after flooding affected portions of Missouri and Illinois. Throughout the duration of the relief operations, nearly 400 Red Cross volunteers opened 12 shelters, served more than 71,000 meals and snacks and provided emergency assistance to more than 500 families.
“The Red Cross depends on the generous support of the American public to assist people affected by disasters. This support will make a real difference in people’s lives,” said Story.
Unit 143 organizes duplicate bridge games around the region. For information on games, tournaments and membership, visit the group’s website at www.unit143.org.
