Our
Fall Sectional Will Host
Elections
for the Board of Directors.
There
are 7 candidates for 4 open directorships. Names
underlined have links to a page telling more about
the candidate.
All
candidates are invited to email information, including
a photo in JPG format, to
be published on this website.
Members
of Unit 143 in good standing may vote for four (4)
candidates of the above roster of 7 candidates during
the Fall Sectional, October 17-19, 2008. Voting
may be done all three days --prior to the Friday and
Saturday afternoon and evening sessions, and Sunday
morning prior to the start of the Swiss Team event.
You may
return your voted absentee ballot by mail (Suzi
Shymanski-Moore, 212 Spooners Mill Dr., Ballwin, MO
63011), or have it hand-carried by someone you trust
and deposited in the ballot box at the Fall Sectional.
Ballots received after the close
of the voting (10 a.m., Sunday, October 19) will not
be counted.
The
results of the election shall be announced as soon
as practical, probably after the October 22nd Board
of Directors meeting.
The
by-laws which govern elections may be found by clicking
here.

How
the winners are determined.
The
ballots are counted (twice) and a tally is kept for
each candidate. A simple plurality shows the
winners. In other words, the 4 persons with
the most votes win. A majority is NOT necessary.
In case of a tie, the Board of Directors will
vote to break the tie.
Mathematically,
this method implies that if a Unit 143 member really,
really wants Candidate A to win -- and is more or
less indifferent to who else wins -- then the member
should vote for ONLY that ONE candidate. This
means that Candidate A will get one vote from the
member and no other candidate will get a vote from
that particular member. In other words, the
member is not adding to the votes garnered by the
"competition." Obviously, this is
a method that is only desirable when you do not care
about who ELSE wins, so long as YOUR candidate wins.
This method also works if you have 2 or 3 candidates
you want to win -- and do not care who else wins;
vote for the candidates you really, really want to
win.
And,
of course, if you have 5 candidates you want to win,
you'll have to make a choice and vote for NO MORE
THAN 4, or else your ballot will not count at all,
for anyone.
